Clawhammer PhotoUpon leaving roots-rockers the Pontiac Brothers, guitarist/vocalist Jon Wahl formed Clawhammer, a quartet that mixed the classic rock & roll sensibilities of his former aggregation with the surreal absurdity of rock weirdos like Captain Beefheart, Pere Ubu, Devo, and Half Japanese. The remainder of the lineup includes guitarist Chris Bagarozzi, bassist Rob Walther, and drummer Bob Lee. After a 1989 Australian EP, Poor Robert, Clawhammer signed to Sympathy for the Record Industry and delivered a full-length, self-titled debut in 1990. A covers EP, Double Pack Whack Attack, appeared in 1991, as did a complete re-recording of Devo's debut album, retitled Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Not Devo. Around the time of 1992's Ramwhale, Wahl began moonlighting in the Red Aunts, as did Bagarozzi with Down by Law; the record was a bit unfocused as a result. 1993's Pablum saw the group on a rebound, recording for Epitaph; they next switched to Interscope for their major-label debut, Thank the Holder Uppers, in 1995. Clawhammer was still going strong into 1997, issuing Hold Your Tongue (And Say Apple). ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
