Boston native Dave Smalley began his musical career leading a straight-edge hardcore band called D.Y.S. (after his hometown's Department of Youth Services). After signing to Taang!, D.Y.S. debuted in 1983 with Wolfpack; they followed it a year later with a more metallic, self-titled album. Smalley went on to join Washington, D.C. hardcore stalwarts Dag Nasty, southern California punk-poppers All and Down by Law. Taang! later paired the two D.Y.S. albums on a CD reissue entitled Fire and Ice. ~ Steve Huey Erlewine, All Music Guide
