While she was with Lone Justice, Maria McKee always showed promise; her gritty, soulful mix of R&B, rock, and country helped distinguish the band from the multitude of '80s roots rockers. When she released her first solo album in the late '80s, it suffered from the same problem as Lone Justice -- lots of potential, but no delivery. However, 1993's You Gotta Sin to Get Saved showed McKee making good on her promise, with an album of impassioned rockers and ballads. Three years later, McKee released her third solo album, Life Is Sweet, an album that marked a depature from her roots-rock roots and a movement toward alternative and art-rock. McKee subsequently took a hiatus from recording, during which time she extricated herself from her deal with Geffen in search of greater creative control. She finally returned in 2003 with another ambitious outing, High Dive. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
