|Canadian jazz guitarist Roy Patterson has been receiving accolades for both his trio and quartet-based work. Patterson started playing guitar as a result of his enthusiasm for rock music, however, which led to him alternating between support positions in rock bands and working as a seaman. His interest in jazz playing came about in the late '70s, leading him to move to Toronto and pursue a career as a jazz guitarist.
It wasn't until the late '80s, however, that he took the step of becoming a bandleader, first with a quartet, and later with a trio. He now alternates between the quartet and trio lineups, recording for Unity Records and Justintime Records. He also teaches jazz at the University of Toronto. ~ Steven McDonald, All Music Guide
