Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra PhotoThe Zasu Pitts Memorial Orchestra was a casual aggregation of San Francisco-area musicians and singers, generally about 15 strong, who paid tribute to pop and soul hits of the '60s. The project was anchored by bassist Stephen Ashman, who started the group mostly for entertainment at parties; local popularity led to several indie releases in 1984, including a jointly billed Ashman/Orchestra EP of mostly original material (Cooler Than Death, which featured Go-Go's drummer Gina Schock), plus the Greatest Hits! Vol. 1 EP and The Pitts Bear Down. By the time of 1987's Thirteen Souls Out of Control, however, the novelty had worn off, and the act was abandoned. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
