Eighties Nostalgia Shows on TV &
Radio
Yup,
the eighties are already old enough to be a perfect source for TV and Radio
stations to use for shows. Please let me know of any in your area. Please
realize this list is only as accurate as the submissions I receive. I'm
from the Atlanta area, so I cannot vouch for the accuracy of any information
about play times, etc. on this page.
If you live in a state which doesn't have a listing,
please fill out the form! Spreading info about your favorite 80s program
helps keep it on the air and encourages good music on the air waves (a
little less Nirvana, and a little more Duran Duran is a good thing in
my book).
Programs on TV
- 80s Night on TNT
Every Friday night at midnight, TNT shows a big movie from the 80s,
usually something teen angst oriented like "Fast Times" or "Breakfast
Club." TNT also likes to do all 80s weekends and stuff like that from
time to time.
- The Big 80's, on VH-1
This show brings back half hour blocks of eighties videos. The videos
tend to run the gamut from New Wave to Punk to Hard Rock To Pop, a real
potpourri of different videos. Sometimes they have guest VJ's that are
people who were big during the eighties (like Belinda
Carlise). If you liked the VH-1 Big Eighties CD compilation, you'll
love this show. I don't think this show is on a regular basis anymore,
only occasionally. 5 out of 5.
- Eighties Flashback Weekends, on MuchMusic
Not available widely in the US, this is the better version of Mtv from
Canada. They actually play videos, you know, the reason Mtv was on in
the first place. From time to time they have a weekend of just eighties
music, more so than VH-1 has ever done.
- Eight Track Flashback, on VH-1
Not an eighties show per say, but they do have the occasional segment
about the real early eighties. They've also done features on what would
become some of the staples of the eighties, like CBGB's. Plus, 8-tracks
were made until 1988! (George Harrison's Cloud 9 is reported to be the
last 8-track issued by Columbia House).
- It Came From The Eighties, on MTv
This is a special (with a sequel) that is a clips show of different
themes that explores what has happened to people since they've left
the spotlight and shows off different fads (like skinny ties and rubik
cubes). It's fun, but doesn't really stand up to repeated viewings (gets
sorta tiring to see Quiet Riot mugging
for the camera). 2 out of 5.
- Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Sci-Fi
channel
Now that they've moved to the Sci-Fi channel, they've begun adding cheezy
80s classics to their torments."Space Mutiny", "Overdrawn at the Memory
Bank", "Hobgoblins", and "Devil Fish" have been shown so far.
- Pop Up Videos, on VH-1
If you don't mind seeing little word balloons during the video with
interesting tid bits on the video and the musicians (and just about
anything), then you get to see some cool 80s videos. Sometimes they
do a theme, like 1981 or "Self-Love". With
some videos, the pop-ups are way more interesting than the video itself
(remember, not every 80s video was watchable, like Toto's
"Africa" for instance). 4 out of 5.

Programs on Radio
- BackTrax
USA
Recieved in Email from: Jay This program is more conservative
with the nostaligic flashbacks, and tends to play longer streaks (4
or five in a row). What I really like about this program is that they
play more obscure songs. It's pretty much guaranteed that they'll throw
in at least two songs that either I've never heard before or I was convinced
nobody on the planet would remember. I give them at least 4 stars out
of 5.
- Nina Blackwood's Absolutely 80s
A show heard all over the U.S. that features one of MTV's first VJ's
playing the biggest hits of the eighties and reliving all your memories.
It's the best syndicted show around. If it isnt on your station, call
them and request it! It's 3 hours long, check their website
for station listings.
- "Retro Radio"
A program that is part of the schedule of one of those national radio
networks that feeds smaller-market stations 24/7. The show is broadcast
Saturday night from 9:00pm to 1:00am Eastern Time, and is hosted by
Tom Daniels. I listen to it on PAC 93 from Ogdensburg, New York. Requests
are taken at 1-800-247-HITS during the show. Tom Daniels is also reachable
by email (retro@dj.net), but
he does not read his email during the show.
- Retro Pop Reunion
Nationally-syndicated show heard Sunday nights from 7 to 11 pm on Alice
92.9 FM, Buffalo, NY. Playing the biggest hits of the video music era.
99% 80s, 1% early 90s. Host: Joe Cortez

- Mix 101.9, Fayetteville, Arkansas, Mixstalgia
Weekends
Friday Evening to Sunday Night
- Flashback Cafe, on KROQ
All I know about this one is that it runs at noon in LA and features
Richard Blade, Mr. New Wave himself. There is also a Flashback Sunday,
which ends at eight, but I don't live in California, so I don't know
when it starts.
- Star 100.7
in San Diego, California.
An 80's and 90's station, and on weekdays from noon until 1:00 p.m.,
they have the all-request 80's at noon.
- 104.9
Bay Area
24hrs a day, Channel 104.9 plays primarily 80's new wave and some 90's
less harsh alternative. The best part is....no deejays! More music and
fairly long blocks of tunes.
- Power 96.3 in Arcata, in Humboldt County
California.
The show is at noon, and they pick songs as well as take requests. The
DJ has heard positive Guestbook from people in their thirties who were
there in the 1980's and they like the show. They play a wide range including
the Cure, Fixx, as well as cheezy things like Billy Ocean.
- KCXX 103.9, San Bernardino, California
"The Eighties at Eight" on weeknights.
- Star 100.7 in San Diego

- Retro Request Show, on 95.1, WAPE in Jacksonville,
Fla.
Every Sunday night, 9-midnight, Hosted by 80's-lover Amadeus, runs the
gamit from late 80's pop crap to wave; although the tendency tends to
be early-to-mid 80's stuff. Awesome
show, I plan my Sunday nights around it. I know Amadeus makes a point
to go out and constantly find CD's to satisfy requests he can't do (and
they're rare...) on a later show. Amadeus also takes requests on the
net, his e-mail is amadeus@wape951.com
- The 80's Cafe, on 99.9, Kiss FM in Daytona
Beach
It's requests mostly, and runs M-F noon to 1 pm. Great for those secretaries
sitting in their office who wanna hear 80's ac stuff...I can't remember
the last time they did an hour without playing Hall and Oates! They
were cool, but enough already! I live in Gainesville, which is in the
center of Florida in the northern half, and I get each of these stations
in pretty clearly. Oh, and just to cover our butts, you certainly have
my permission to post said info...it would be wrong to deprive 80's
listeners not knowledgable on these shows.
- The Awesome
Eighties Retro Lunch-107.1 WA1A Melbourne, Florida
Every weekday from 12 PM to 1 PM All request 80s music for your lunchhour.
- Friday Night Eighties-MIX 105.1 WOMX Orlando,

- The House Of Retro Pleasure, Atlanta on 99.7
(its on Audio net)
It's on from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm during the week. The 80's shows they do tend to be
more new wave than pop. Steve (the dj) does a great job. He plays a
wide variety of songs with a smattering of old punk and most recently
brought back an "it came from the 90's but sounds like the 80's" bit.
He talks about the artists, has a birthday segment as well as a "this
day in history" segment. It also has a "Big Hair Scare" song at about
3:15 p.m. by a band like Warrant or Ratt or Poison.
- True - Star-94 in Atlanta
Friday, 5 p.m. til about 3 a.m. in the morning. The show truly runs
a potpourri of 80s tunes from Pretty Poison to Poison, from Greg Kihn
to NKOTB. Vanilla Ice and Tone Loc, too! It's mostly upbeat songs, no
wimpy ballads from Elton John or Patti Austin or Toto. For some reason,
they like to play Lou Gramm's Midnight Blue.
- B-98.5 (WSB-FM), Atlanta, Georgia
Big Eighties weekend, all weekend. More or less every other weekend,
this a/c station goes 80s--or about 60% 80s--they still throw in some
currents and recurrents. No Vanilla Ice here but they do play a wider
variety of pop stuff than you'd here on Star94's Friday Night Eighties
or on the alt-rock station, 99x. They'll throw in Hooked on Classics,
along with a variety that includes Huey Lewis, Debbie Gibson, Flock
of Seagulls, Milli Vanilli, George Michael and Olivia Newton John. No
hard stuff from Run DMC or GNR and no way soft stuff from Air Supply
or Bette Midler.

- WINN in Columbus, Indiana
An all 80's commercial station.
- None
- KDEC (DC 100.5), Decorah, "The 80's At 8"
Mon.-Fri. 8pm to 9pm, Seems to be fairly popular amongst my fellow college
students (Decorah is home to Luther College). They used to have guest
DJ's from the area do it on a weekly basis, but have since stopped.
Also used to be 80 minutes long, but they've since cut back to 1 hour.
Every so often they have a night where they run 2 tracks in a row from
the same artist for the whole show.
- KWIC 99.3 Topeka
They have an 80's hour at 7:00 every night and and an 80s show saturday
night.

- "Stuck in the 80's", on WMPG-FM 90.9
Received in Email: Just thought I'd pass along information
on a great 80's-music show that plays here weekly in Portland, Maine;
it's called "Stuck in the 80's" on WMPG-FM 90.9, hosted by Ron Raymond,
Sundays, 7-9pm. It's great to hear good music, since nothing's good
on the radio anymore. Too bad the show's not on everyday.
- "Sunday Night at the 80s", Baltimore Maryland
on MIX 106.5
It starts at 6PM with all 80s Requests until 8PM. Then comes BackTrax
USA from 8PM until 10PM and then from 10PM-12AM it is the 80s Wave.
It is pretty cool. I haven't missed a Sunday yet!
- WDAF, 61 Country, 610 AM Kansas City, Missouri.
A Country "80's at 8", weeknights, you can hear it on Real Audio via
their web site, wdaf.com. It's mostly music and focuses on a major era
of transition for country music. A great combination of the "traditional"
with the contemporary.
- WBMX, 98.5 in Boston, "Back to the 80's Friday
Night"
They also host BackTrax USA on
Sunday nights at 8pm.
- WFNX 101.7, Boston

(at least 9 PM to midnight). They also have 8 o'clock Flashbacks every
weekday at 8-9pm on Q95 95.5
- 80's Class Reunion on KS95 (94.5 FM) in Minneapolis/St
Paul
Monday-Thursday 8:00-9:00 pm Each night they pick a year from the eighties
and play music from that year. Tends towards the real mainstream --
lots of Journey, no Cabaret Voltaire. They do play the occasional Bow
Wow Wow or Dead or Alive though, so it isn't completely AOR-type stuff.
No metal, except Bon Jovi (which often go shelved with metal back in
the days.) Recently began to play Milli Vanilli again, which is good
or bad depending on how one views such things.
- Friday Night Eighties on KS95.
Friday 6:00 pm - 1:00 am. Just like the Class Reunion show, except longer
and without the year-by-year theme.
- For those who like the big hair pop metal of
the era, both 93.7 FM (93X) and rock 100.3 have all-eighties weekends
fairly often.
- None
- Star 104.1 FM out of Springfield , MO
ALL 80s music. Which is the very best. They run the show BackTrax
USA on weekends and one of the best selections of 80s music in these
parts. I BELIEVE their call letters are KKLH
- KGBX 105.9 FM Springfield, MO
Plays a predominantly 80s mixture of music. Mostly 70's and 80s stuff.

101.3 KROK plays all 80's music, hair metal, etc., on the weekends.
- "Friday Night at the 80's" on Y94FM (WYYY-FM
Syracuse, New York)
Lots of music, minimum talk and commercials. It airs Friday nights starting
at 6:00pm. Also, every weekend is a "Big 80's Weekend" on Y94FM, which
basically means they play a heavy 80's component on weekends. The station
has a large coverage area, reaching much of New York State and even
into Eastern Ontario (where I am).
- RETRO LUNCH: Alice 92.9 FM Buffalo, NY
. 80s hits every weekday from 12 to 1 pm

- Mix 100.5, Rochester, NY
"Time Warp Weekend", Friday 7pm - Sunday 8pm
- Resurrection Sunday on 106.5 The End, WEND
Charlotte, North Carolina
The "Wizard" plays requests from 8am till 12pm. They call it the roots
of modern rock, it's not top 40 stuff. The End is an alternative radio
station. They have a web page www.1065.com
and are best known (in my opinion) for the yearly Weenie Roast at Block
Buster Pavilion in Charlotte, NC.
- Lite Rock 105, Fargo
The All Request 80's Lunch Hour, All 80's including the contest "The
Outragous 80's (name the artist/title and win prizes)

All 80s Radio Station
- 97.5 WPST, Philadelphia, PA
PST Retro 80s lunch, weekdays 12 noon to 1 pm
- "Retro Lunch" on 95.5 WBRU, Rhode Island.
It has been playing 80's tracks since 1990. They actually started the
station around 1988? not exactly sure. Now they are an "alternative"
radio station, however they must realize they're roots are the 80's.
I can remember hearing the Sugercubes, Violent Femmes, the Smithereens,
and many, many other late 80's college hits.
- "The 80's cafe with Jordan Hart", WSSX 95.1,
Charleston
From Jordan Hart: Noon-1PM I love my show. And just to let you
know..it is the highest rated show in the entire market!! The 80s are
alive and well in Charleston South Carolina. And we play it all from
Van Halen, Eric Carmen To Paula Abdul and Tone Loc. If it charted in
the 80s...we play it!
- None

Friday nights. They also play retro from 12 to 1 Mon thru Fri.
- Star 93.1 WWST in Knoxville
"80's All Request Lunch", Monday-Friday 12-1. They also have what they
call flasbacks continously throughout the day.
- "The '80s at Eight", In San Antonio, radio
station KSMG-FM (105.3 FM), Magic 105.
Submittor name: Diane A.
They play '80s music exclusively during the 8-9 p.m. (CT) slot. It's
hosted by '80s fanatic Mark Velasco. They routinely get new songs to
play on the show (ex: six months ago they started playing Icehouse's
"Electric Blue"), and requests can be sent via phone, fax, or e-mail.
The station has an Internet address, too! It's www.magic105.com,
and it's got cool graphics and everything. What's really neat is that
the station also plays '80s music throughout the night and day, and
it broadcasts "The Amazing '80s" every Sat. nite from 10 p.m.-midnight
(CT).
- 101X in Austin Texas has a Flashback Lunch
from 12-1.
Rachel Marisay plays 80's requests.
- "Retro Radio (c)" on 88.1 KTXT FM Lubbock,
Texas
The show has been going for 7 years, features 80's New Wave and 80's
Dance. It's on every Saturday night from 7-10pm. One of the first Retro
shows on the Radio. The current host is Kid Chaos who has hosted for
2 years. Features include new remixes of 80's songs, classic remixes,
on-air mixes, a nightly "Cheesy Song of the 80's" and an occassional
Feature Artist, as well as goofy antics and trivia. The station is tenatively
scheduled to be on the internet by December `98, currently only people
in Lubbock can listen. Visit the KTXT web page at www.ttu.edu/~ktxt.
- "Retro Cafe," KBFM B104, Edinburg

- Mix 96.5, Houston, Texas
Drive Home, 5-7pm, variety of 1980s music.
- 106.9 FM - "The Point, Houston, Texas
This station plays only 80's music all the time 24/7 with very little repeats each day. They also
broadcast on the internet at - www.1069thepoint.com I listen to this station when
I go to Houston for meetings and can sometimes pick-up their signal here in Central
Texas, otherwise I listen on the internet. It's a really good station for 80's lovers so
give a listen and list it for all to enjoy.
- K-Fox 95.5, Lufkin, Texas
Flashback Cafe with Steve Eberhart, Weekdays Noon-1
- 96.7 in Austin, 97.5 in Waco, Central Texas
Way Back Wednesday, roughly 7am-6pm Wednesdays. Both 96.7 in Austin
and 97.5 from Waco have Way Back Wednesday, but I've found that the
Waco version is much better. It plays a wider variety of 80s music,
sometimes things you haven't heard SINCE the 80s. The Austin station
repeats the same old late-70s disco (if I hear "Ring my Bell" one more
time....) and 80s super-popular music only. They also can't go an entire
Wednesday without inserting some of their regular pop music into the
mix.
- KDGE 94.5 The Edge, Dallas, Texas
The Flashback Cafe, 12:05-1:05 p.m. Nothing but 80's music for an hour.

- '80s Tonight, on WRQX 107.3
It's decent. Most of the music is popular, not too much new wave (the
station itself plays top 40 hits), but I listen to it to get my daily
dose of '80s music while I do my homework. I don't find too many repeats
of songs from night to night, either.
